The Samaritan Pre-Marriage Seminar
"Marriage as Conversation"
Since 1960, Samaritan Center of Puget Sound has been preparing couples for successful, life-long marriage. Our seminar is designed to be complete in itself or as a supplement to the counseling which couples may receive from their pastor.
A successful marriage relationship is something like a deeply personal, ongoing conversation that two people choose to engage in, expressing their shared values, their differences and their commitment to grow in their love for each other over time. Join us in this safe, small-group setting for an interactive and enlivening experience, structured to highlight learning about marriage and to provide opprtunities for couples to engage in conversation about their life together. During the seminar, you'll strengthen your communication and problem-solving skills as you focus on the relationship areas that are the most challenging for couples. These include:
Registration Information Seminars begin the first Tuesday of the month, meeting from 7 to 9 pm for four weeks, either in Seattle (Greenlake) or Bellevue. A minimum of three couples is required for a seminar to be held. The cost is $200.00 per couple. For more information, call 206.527.2273 x337 or contact Mark Houglum at MHouglum@SamaritanPS.org. Samaritan also offers individual marriage preparation in which a couple meets with a therapist for three to six sessions. The fee is negotiated. This often is a good option for couples entering remarriage. Samaritan can provide couples with a Premarriage Inventory for use either in the seminar or individual sessions.

Participant Comments“I wish we had taken this class three years ago. I 'd recommend it to any newly engaged couple I know." "Great ideas for anyone who is getting married." “The financial planning was really helpful.” ““We still use the exercises – many years later!” "What was most beneficial was hearing other couples at the same stage of life as we are." “Talking about communication was really informative– it allowed us to see where we need to work and where our strengths are.”
Mark Houglum is a licensed marriage and family therapist and Lutheran pastor. He has led the seminar since 2000. His approach is to explore with couples the ways in which they can best develop and maintain a marriage relationship that is loving and respectful, open to growth, fun and mutual encouragement.
